Lymphedema Management Program

Lymphedema, an accumulation of protein-rich fluid in the superficial tissues, is a very common and serious condition worldwide.  Left untreated it has important pathological and clinical consequences for the patient.  Secondary lymphedema is often caused by injury, scarring, excision and radiation therapy of the lymph nodes.  Post mastectomy lymphedema of the upper extremity after breast cancer is a very common condition in the United States.

Another cause of lymphedema is malformation of the lymphatic system (primary lymphedema).  In such cases, the swelling may appear after simple accidents, such as sports injuries or surgery, which can suddenly overload the lymphatic system.  All therapists are certified in lymphedema management.
